Kocaeli University Laboratory of Image and Signal processing (KULIS) has been establised with the support of IEEE Foundation in 2003 soon after Dr. Sarp Ertürk's appointment at Kocaeli University (KOU) in 2001. Currently, there are three professors, three research assistants, five full-time researchers and many graduate/undergraduate students within KULIS. Research activity in KULIS is fundamentally focussed on signal and image processing. Within this scope, research in topics like video stabilization, image/video coding, archive video restoration, fast motion estimation methods, 3-D model creation and coding, hyperspectral segmentation and classification, iris recognition, visual tracking of animal behavior is being carried out.
KULIS also performs interdisciplinary research by collaborations within the university. Collaborative research with Physic and Mechanical Engineering Departments of KOU, to design and develop general purpose spectrometers is accomplished. Furthermore, image processing and software development support for Laser Technologies Research and Application Center (LATARUM) is provided for certain laser applications. Video coding application research in embedded systems has started to enable SME collaboration with the support of NUX System Inc. recently. A joint research project about video coding with South Korea's Chung-Ang University is conducted. KULIS also performs medical image processing research with KOU Faculty of Medicine and Lundbeck Inc.
